The Diapers of Tomorrow
It’s important to remember that no matter what you choose to diaper your child with, it will have impact. There is really no “eco-friendly” way to diaper baby—but there are choices you can make to reduce your impact. If you choose cloth, there are many ways to make cloth diapers greener. With our tips, you can personally save thousands of dollars and almost one ton11 of waste from the landfills.
Go Diaperless with Infant Potty Training
Most babies in the world don’t wear diapers at all. Does this mean they just go whenever and wherever they please? No! Instead, parents pay attention to the cues their babies exhibit before elimination. Even at just a few weeks old, babies learn to wait until parents give a signal before relieving themselves.
Here in the United States, the practice is known as “elimination communication” or “infant potty training.” Babies who start potty training right at birth may remain diaper free all day, although some parents still rely on a few diapers, especially when out and about. The result? Substantially fewer diapers to wash or throw away.
Linda Easton of Baby Signs, Inc., understands that infant potty training might seem overwhelming to new parents. As an alternative, she recommends waiting until the baby is a year old. With the help of infant sign language, baby can communicate when he or she has to go. “If you think that sounds too early,” she says, “consider the fact that infant potty training is successfully practiced around the world and that before disposable diapers came around, 95 percent of all babies in the United States were potty trained by 18 months.”
